Biden: Holdouts among Chrysler debtors

Speaking on a conference call with reporters, Vice President Joe Biden said he was optimistic that Chrysler could still complete a merger with Fiat SpA, get the debtors on board and win approval from the UAW for its concessions.
"Whether it all gets done in time and still locks up, completes the Fiat deal, which appears close at hand, is going to be a close call," Biden said.
"I’m not prepared to predict what that outcome will be. I do believe it's within Chrysler's capacity that either through this reorganization on their own and tying up with Fiat, and or an orderly reorganization in bankruptcy, to survive and come out of this."
Biden said Detroit was going through a "painful transition," but that "I really generally believe that American automobiles can still, over the next decade of the 21st century, lead the world."
He added: "I think it can be done within the timeframe set, but I’m not prepared to bet my daughter’s graduate school tuition on that."

GM Plans to Eliminate as Many as 1,200 Auto Outlets

General Motors Corp., facing a June 1 restructuring deadline to avoid bankruptcy, will begin notifying outlets the automaker plans to eliminate by May 11, the company told dealers today in a video conference call.
The Detroit-based automaker told dealers it is targeting 1,000 to 1,200 underperforming outlets and will cut more than 450 stores with the ending of the Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer and Saab brands, Susan Garontakos, a GM spokeswoman, said in an interview. GM plans to reach its goal of reducing its network by 2,600 sites through attrition and consolidation, she said.
GM said yesterday it intends to cut dealerships by 42 percent to 3,605 from 6,248 at the end of last year to help reduce liabilities by $44 billion and keep $15.4 billion in U.S. loans. Dealers Russ Shelton of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Lynn Thompson of Springfield, Missouri, said GM is determined.

Car Oil Change Frequency Myth

The 3,000 mile Myth, a notion that car oil needs to routinely be charged every 3,000
miles.
However, according to a new research in the California Integrated Waste Management Board
(CIWMB), it shows that Changing Motor Oil Every 3,000 Miles Isn't Always Recommended
CIWMB Chair Margo Reid Brown says, "Used motor oil poses a great risk to the environment. With better made cars and the rise of synthetic oils, the 3,000 mile standard is not always recommended."
Oil change recommendations are based on the type of driving done, normal or severe. Most drivers can use the advice given for operating under normal conditions. Recommendations are detailed in the owner's manual of each car. If you have any doubts, contact your car dealer or a qualified mechanic for advice.

Do a Car Oil Change yourself!

To prolong the life of your car’s engine, the best choice is to change your oil regularly.

It is a good way to save money if you do it yourself. Then how to do it in the right way? However, it’s not a task for everybody. Most of the job is easy, but you’ll probably have to raise your car to get at the drain plug. You’ll need a sturdy set of ramps for your car or a floor jack and safety stands designed for your car’s weight. Also, before you start, look under the car and make sure you’ll be able to get at the filter to remove it. Some makes of cars have awkward setups that make it nearly impossible to get at and remove the filter with ordinary tools. If that’s the case, call for an appointment and pay the $30 fee. Check your owner’s manual for the vehicle’s oil capacity and drain plug location. For most jobs, you’ll need 4 or 5 qts. of oil, an oil filter wrench, a box-end wrench the size of your filler plug, a funnel, rags and, of course, a new oil filter appropriate for your car or truck. TIP: If your car’s engine is cold, let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up the oil. This helps loosen the contaminants in the oil so they’ll flow out into the drain pan. Ok, now, start doing it yourself!

It is troublesome if your car can not start because of the dead battery, then how to care for the battery?
Please check below maintenance tips:
Telltale Signs of a Low or Failing Battery
Your headlights look dim at idle and then brighten when you rev the engine.
The starter turns slowly, barely starting the car. But you may have alternator wiring problems that prevent the battery from fully charging. If that’s the case, schedule a service appointment.
Check your fan belt. If it’s loose, frayed, cracked or glazed, have it serviced or replaced.

A low battery can also be caused by:
Frequent short trips.
Too many accessories left on or added.
Look for a purchase date chart on the battery (it may be handwritten).
The battery case will also have a decal stating its expected life, such as 60 or 84 months.

New York Putting On a Brave Front When Fear Is in the Air

IF you listen closely at the New York auto show, you can almost hear the pent-up pressure beneath the optimistic speeches and aspirational displays of gleaming sheet metal: it is the sound of an industry holding its collective breath.
During media previews of the show last week, car executives sought to reassure anyone within range of a microphone or notepad that perhaps the worst of the sales carnage is over, that compelling new models will tempt people back into dealer showrooms. Consumers, at least those with gainful employment, can judge for themselves at the 2009 show, which runs through April 19 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
Many of the car introductions carried a worrisome subtext, especially those of the two Detroit companies in critical care, Chrysler and General Motors. Before a redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee drove into the spotlight, James E. Press, Chrysler’s vice chairman, cited mildly hopeful sales statistics from the first three months of 2009 to show that the company was making progress.
Yet even as the reporters and analysts praised and pored over the Grand Cherokee, many were whispering about whether Chrysler would still be around next year, when the Jeep is due to go on sale as a 2011 model.

U.S. auto bankruptcies could deepen Mexican downturn

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Any bankruptcies among U.S. automakers could further batter Mexico's auto industry, push some parts suppliers to the breaking point and spur tens of thousands of layoffs.
Fears are mounting that General Motors Corp and Chrysler LLC could be lurching toward bankruptcy. On Tuesday, a source close to GM said the company is in "intense" preparation for a possible bankruptcy filing.
A Chapter 11 filing by either automaker could upset Mexican assembly lines and disrupt the flow of cash to auto parts makers, possibly spurring bankruptcies among the smallest or those already facing liquidity problems, analysts say.
"It could set off a domino effect throughout the whole (car parts) industry," said Armando Soto, head of Mexican auto industry consultancy Kaso y Asociados.
Mexican subsidiaries of U.S. automakers are unlikely to close their Mexico plants, as cheaper labor costs there make the factories essential to restructuring and cost-cutting plans.
But hundreds of parts makers who are primarily suppliers to U.S. firms -- either in their Mexican or U.S. factories -- stand to be hit hard by U.S. auto sector woes.
Companies that are major suppliers to U.S. firms and are owed large amounts of money could be pushed to breaking point by a bankruptcy process, said Agustin Rios, head of Mexico's auto parts industry association, or INA.
"If they can't deal with the financial weight, they will go bankrupt and that is going to affect the other automakers they supply," Rios said.
